Steeplechase is a Race for the Arts: How are the Funds Used?

The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Since 1984, Mason Houghland Lampton has hosted the event as a Race for the Arts with proceeds going to six beneficiary organizations: the Historic Columbus Foundation, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the Springer Opera House, The Columbus Museum, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and The Ida & Cason Callaway Foundation.

Steeplechase has raised $4,278,486 for its beneficiaries over the last 40 years. So, how are the proceeds utilized in each organization? We've been on a mission to find out. Read on to learn how Steeplechase's financial impact on each organization is funneled back into Columbus, Georgia's arts scene year round.

"The Steeplechase enables the continued success of Historic Columbus and the arts in our community.   From low interest façade and rehab loans to moving endangered houses and developing an outdoor history trail, historic preservation has had a significant impact in our community this past year thanks to the continued support of The Steeplechase.  It has been Historic Columbus’ honor to be named as one of the beneficiaries of this great event." – Elizabeth Walden, Executive Director of Historic Columbus

"We consider ourselves to be quite fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries of Steeplechase.  The funds we receive each year are undesignated in their use and give us the flexibility that we need to offer free programming to the community, our educational programs, and to continue to support the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus in our facility. Oh - and Steeplechase is fun!" – Norm Easterbrook, Executive Director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts

"As a National Historic Landmark, the Springer Opera House uses these funds for the preservation and the upkeep of our 154 year treasured State Theatre of Georgia." - Danielle Varner Patterson, CEO/Executive Producer of Springer Opera House

"The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is proud to be one of the beneficiaries of the annual Steeplechase event. Proceeds from the Steeplechase help us keep the tradition of exceptional orchestral music thriving in Columbus, while also allowing us to expand our creative endeavors by partnering with the most innovative and talented guest soloists from around the world. Because of these funds, the CSO is able to produce outstanding live music experiences for everyone in our community to enjoy." – Kern Wadkins, Executive Director of Columbus Symphony Orchestra

"The Columbus Museum (COMU) is grateful for the generous support we receive each year from Steeplechase. This funding is vital to our general operations, allowing us to offer engaging programs that enrich our community. Steeplechase’s support also strengthens our collaborations with partner arts organizations, ensuring we can sustain our mission and continue delivering high-quality cultural experiences." – Marianne Richter, Executive Director of The Columbus Museum
