Hold your horses! There's a new arts benefit in town.
On May 3, the Columbus Museum will host their new 'Racing for COMU' event. The Derby-themed party's tickets go on sale next week, and all proceeds will go toward operational costs for the Museum.
We corresponded with Elizabeth Cliatt and Landry Cartledge to get the inside scoop about this exciting upcoming event. Read on to learn more!

Q: Racing for COMU is being given in honor of Mason and Mary Lou Lampton. Can you speak about their importance to the Museum and Board?
A: Upon returning to her home, here in Columbus in 1977, Mary Lu immediately dove in. She joined the Museum’s Guild, has been a long-standing member of the COMU Board of Directors and has even served as Board President. I think it is safe to say that Mary Lu has nearly served on every committee, and she has always been an incredibly active participant in fundraising efforts.
Mary Lu has given countless hours in advocating for the Museum and its mission. She has been instrumental in advancing this incredible institution, enriching both its collection and the experience for all those that grace its doors.
Mason’s vision and leadership as a founder of Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is a true cornerstone in the region’s art scene and has raised over $4 million for the arts in our region with COMU being a proud beneficiary.
Q: What are you most looking forwrad to about this event? What can guests expect?
A: Who doesn’t love the Kentucky Derby?! And I feel like it has been some time, since the Columbus community has had a larger avenue to come together around such a fun event.
We will have Betting and Bourbon to kick off the evening and, of course, the Race streaming! “Bites” (Don’t worry: You won’t leave hungry!) will be provided by Jamie Keating. And, post race, the evening will transition to a focus on live music and dancing.

Q: Is this a benefit for the Museum? How will funds be utilized?
A: Funds raised from this event will go directly to supporting Museum operations—ensuring that it can continue to bring American art and regional history to life for all of those in the Chattahoochee Valley.
It is with these contributions that will allow the Museum to offer engaging educational programs, preserve and expand collections, and remain open and free for all visitors.
By supporting this fundraiser, guests are helping to sustain the Museum’s mission and ensure that art, history, and culture remain accessible to everyone in our community.

Q: What else should our audience know about the occasion?
If you don’t know Mason and Mary Lu, find a way to get to know them! Landy and I are truly honored to be chairing this event for the Museum and in honor of such a special couple. Derby attire and hats are encouraged!
Our betting component, while helping raise additional funds for the Museum onsite, will have a wonderful prize associated. The Bourbon component will be more like a game. We are still working out the details, but think Bourbon Pull.
Also, the evening doesn’t just end with Racing, stay for the after Race fun! Jamie Keating will be using his creative flair for all things Derby related to food and beverages, and we can't wait to celebrate with everyone.
