MoMA Comes to The Columbus Museum on Loan

This Fall, The Columbus Museum will welcome a loan of seven pieces from the Museum of Modern Art. The loan has been orchestrated through The Columbus Museum's participation in a national program through The Art Bridges Foundation.

Niles Spencer (1893-1952) Near Avenue A (detail), 1993, Oil on canvas, Gift of Nelson A. Rockefeller, Generously lent by The Museum of Modern Art, New York as part of the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership.

Founded by Alice Walton, The Art Bridges Foundation exists to expand access to American Art throughout the nation. The organization has a presence in 49 states, has more than 200 partner museums and has reached a total of 2.3 million people over the course of its existence.

This is the first time The Columbus Museum has been a partner of the Art Bridges Network. "I am thrilled to announce we are participating in the Art Bridges Partner Loan Network by borrowing seven artworks from the Museum of Modern Art," said Marianne Richter, Executive Director at The Columbus Museum. "The works include paintings and sculpture from the 1920s and 1930s and will be displayed in conversation with work in our permanent galleries."

The Art Bridges Partner Loan Program is unique because the loans occur at no cost to participants. This is extremely beneficial because it cuts the high cost of shipping and handling works of art out of the equation completely. This unique program from Art Bridges has led to millions of Americans being able to view highly-valuable works of art in their local communities. Now, Columbus is one of these places. Admission to The Columbus Museum is also free. What's more? The Partner Loan Program also contributes to the costs of educational programming centered around the borrowed objects for the duration of their stay.

John Storrs (1885-1956), Forms in Space, c. 1924, Brass copper and steel on marble base, The Riklis Collection of McCrory Corporation, Generously lent by The Museum of Modern Art, New York as part of the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership.

For duration of the year-long loan, The Columbus Museum will display seven unique pieces of painting and sculpture from MoMA into the permanent collection galleries. Highlights of the loan are paintings by Milton Avery and Stuart Davis. Educational programming has been developed to encourage visitors to engage with the loaned objects while exploring The Columbus Museum's permanent collection in exciting new ways.

Interested in learning more? Attend The Columbus Museum's Curator Tour with Jonathan F. Walz, Ph. D. on September 12 from 5:30PM-7PM. This guided tour will focus on the objects loaned from MoMA and Walz will share insight into American art of the 1920s and 1930s.◾️
